On October 3rd, 2024, we hosted a highly insightful webinar titled “Transform Your Business with Security & Privacy Compliance under the DPDPA which attracted a wide range of professionals, from data security experts to business leaders. With data breaches and growing concerns around personal data privacy, the newly enacted Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP Act) has become a hot topic for organizations across industries. The act is about protecting personal data and how it is empowering individuals to take control of their data. Webinar dived deep into how businesses can empower themselves and protect their user’s data while complying with the Act.

We were thrilled to have a successful turnout for this event, and the discussion was enlightening and timely, as companies strive to comply with the latest data privacy regulations. We discussed how this act impacts businesses and what organizations can do.

Key Highlights from the Webinar:

1. Understanding the DPDP Act’s Impact

Sandeep Vijayaraghavan, EVP of Cybersecurity & Cloud Services at Terralogic, started the webinar by explaining the fundamentals of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and its implications for businesses. Sandeep highlighted that this new law is a game-changer for how personal data is processed, stored, and shared, not only within India but globally. Additionally, how it is empowering users to take control of their data. The session explained how to store personal data and process it, and how cross-border data transfer influences compliance.

Key takeaways included:

  • Consent-based data processing: Businesses must obtain proper consent from individuals before processing their personal information. Consent must be clear, specific, and freely given. It must relate to particular purposes. Businesses must outline the exact reasons for data collection and processing.
  • Data localization and cross-border transfers: Organizations must adhere to stricter controls when transferring personal data outside India while complying with global data privacy standards. The DPDPA establishes a legal requirement for data localization. Organizations have to store data within India to ensure proper compliance. While organizations can transfer data internationally, they must adhere to local regulations and global data privacy standards such as GDPR.

2. The Role of Technology in Ensuring Compliance

The conversation then moved toward how businesses can leverage technology to stay compliant. Compliance is a must for legal reasons, safeguarding personal data and consumer trust. Then panelists discussed a variety of tools, including Data Loss Prevention (DLP) systems, AI-powered analytics, and cloud security solutions, that help businesses monitor data usage, track cross-border transfers, and ensure data protection measures are in place. By leveraging these technologies, businesses can create a comprehensive compliance framework. This will help businesses to meet regulatory requirements and enhance data protection measurements. The ultimate step towards greater transparency and data protection.

3. Practical Tips for Businesses

Then penalists explained how to achieve all these practically. Participants received actionable insights on how they can take immediate steps to meet the compliance requirements of the DPDP Act. As it is necessary to meet the regulatory standards, one must implement them correctly. These actionable include:

  • Conducting data audits to identify what personal data is being collected, where it is stored, and who has access. This process helps in identifying any gaps in data management. It is necessary to ensure that data collection practices are aligned with regulatory requirements.
  • Implementing encryption and other security protocols to protect data from breaches. Utilizing encryption technologies ensures data security at rest and transit.
  • Reviewing and updating privacy policies to ensure transparency with users on how their data is used. Transparency is a key to user trust. Offering users straightforward and concise information regarding their data rights, as well as how we handle and safeguard their data.

4. Interactive Q&A Session

Then it was followed by the Q&A session. One of the most engaging parts of the webinar was the interactive Q&A session. Attendees asked pressing questions about the nuances of the DPDP Act, ranging from handling third-party data processors, the role of consent, and how technology changes data management to the future of cross-border data transfers under this law. Our expert panel provided practical, scenario-based answers, drawing on real-world examples and best practices. They provided clear guidelines for the specific needs of different businesses. As the panel addressed the audience’s concerns and offered actionable insights, attendees felt empowered to implement the knowledge they gained during the session.

Final Thoughts

As organizations adapt to the new realities of data privacy under the DPDP Act. Our mission is to guide them through the complexities and provide the necessary tools and expertise to ensure compliance. We understand these regulations can be complex and we’re here to provide the tools and expertise needed. We’re excited about the journey ahead and look forward to continuing the conversation.

Data privacy is more than compliance. It is about building trust with your customers and honoring their privacy.
